Basketball!

I never went to the College basketball before but I should have. I had a Blast! I think I am going to do this more often! The game was exciting. The music was great and you get to people watch throughout the whole thing.

The most interesting part of the game was watching this family that sat in front of us. The mom and dad with four little boys. The mom was going to go to the concession stand, and one of her sons told her he wanted a hotdog or something.
She looked at him and said "Well I want a lot of things too!" then she walked off and left him there. What she didn't say, and what she probably wanted to say was
"...and because of you and your brothers I don't have what I want"
I think her son will get over it. I think she needs some time though (LOL). Well we played Stetsons, and they weren't very good players. It seemed as if it was pure chance that they scored at all. I did like their huddle though. They were swaying back and forth, to get their groove going!

The cheerleaders were ok I guess. Jumping around and whatnot Eh..... I did like when the most recent Missy E song came on and they didnt't know what to do , so they wrere kinda looking around and asking. I love it!
You know the little unplanned things that nobody really notices! hahahah. I guess I better put a picture of the actual game. It was fun because of the halftime game and the timeout entertainment. I almost forgot to say that the teams had real life waterboys...I didn't know that there was someone who was there just to fetch water and run back and forth with it. Also there were little kids wiping up sweat with towels. I dunno how healthy that is........
There is so much to see at a game I guess....

King Kong

Umm I know this may not be a popular sentiment, but I didn't like this movie at all.
I liked the Skull Island with all the creatures and bugs etc.
Seriously, I just can't get into this girl falling for this monkey/ape. Those kinds of apes are so violent in real life and unpredictable.
What was all this love and stuff they were trying to pitch?
I just didn't get it.
I liked the bugs, dinosaurs, and creepy crawlies. That's it.
I am going to see The Family Stone to make myself feel better about the movies hahahha

Very Fru Fru

We went to the cocktail party and the invitation said cocktail attire so everybody was dolled up. I really liked how they set up the food spread. The shrimp cocktail was in these little martini glasses and that made it look so cute. They served 'heavy' hors d'oeuveres and wine, or beer or whatever alcohol they had.
I forgot what they had there.

The most interesting thing to me was how the people interacted.
Since you had to bring a guest, most of the people brought their husbands or wives. Now unless your husband or wife knows some of the people you work with already, you kind of have to spend your time intoducing them around and making sure that they feel comfortable. That's fine.
BUT if you don't have to do that and you are a single and /or divorced male doctor, you can talk to your friends and look at all the women while you are doing it.
ALSO if you are a single, divorced, or married (but didn't bring your husband because he didn't want to come and talk to your stuffy co-workers) woman, you can work the room in your cute dress and smile a lot. I loved it!

I wanted to go because I had a few dresses I hadn't worn in a while. I loved Janice's top because (and you can't see too well here ) there is a sheer (maybe chiffon) material that comes up from the bust to halter at the shoulder/neck. I love it...I'll let her tell you who picked it out!
The skirt you can see in the pic, had these shiny strappy ends...
I kinda know how it feels when celebrities work the red carpet now, because when you take pictures of a dress that has a metallic sheen to it, like mine did, the colors kind of wash out! I didn't know that would happen and there was no preventing it. So I that now if I want to take pictures like that I need to wear richer colors.....Bummer :(

Some women wore red, but only a few. Most of them wore black, in traditional cuts. The most interesting thing I heard someone say all night was "Well don't you clean up nice!" I wanted to laugh!
We stayed for a couple hours and then headed out to Cafe Cabernet, where again Eric was super sweet to us. We met some other tender there too ...I think his name is Joe.
The thing is that some of the people from the cocktail party ended up at Cafe after we got there and wanted us to join their table. We didn't though....The jazz band was really really good that night! One of my mentees (even though i think he is close to 50 he was a mentee of mine), who is doing a PhD in Ethno- musicology was there, and really getting down to the music. I have to see this band again soon. They are really something.

Elf Night

We went to Elf night at the Oven Park. It was really great. I had fun running around taking pictures, but I must say that when you have a ton of lights and reflections, pictures come out blurry. They had Santa and of course all the kids wanted a picture and I didn't feel like standing in a long line, then sittting on some guy's lap so I don't have a picture with him.

The cool thing was that they had cookies, cider, hot chocolate, and coffee. I didn't have any but I liked looking at it.
Umm, just for future reference, I think that they should give up the pretense that people like vanilla cookies and just go all chocolate. There was not one chocolate cookie left and plates and plates of vanilla just sitting there. People would go up stare at the vanilla and move on.

Meanwhile Darlene was there! Yeah! The lights on the gazebo structures were so nice. I just can't get great pictures because of the refelctions.
Here we are at this mini gazebo. My co-worker Stormie was actually married here!
Of course I had to get a picture with some elves. This first one is of the husband and wife duo-elves working the cookie table (where all the vanilla cookies were left). Then I got a really cool red elf who was really sweet. Hahah.
Those Elves really had their work cut out for them. Making sure kids were happy, showing where the restrooms were, the works!
I did really like the lights display and all the designs. It really is magical. You don't get the same effect driving through as you do when you are walking. I almost forgot to mention the house. There is a house on the grounds where people can hold parties.
In there they set up really cool christmas trees and christmas scenes.
Janice loves frogs we we got this pic of her by the stuffed animal tree. I like the really old scroll christmas tree in the next pic.

Quatre Poemes, Flemenco, Full Moon

Well last night started off with me reading and listening to renditions from Quatre Poemes Hindous. Eventually I went outside to run some errands. It doesn't seem that cold anymore at night even though it is 48F!
We had to return a shirt to Macy's and we met 'Scrooge' there. Scrooge was the name they gave to our sales attendent there. He didn't know why he wound up with Scrooge, but it was what they had on his name tag.
Well his voice was really low and smooth so I told him he should really be on Radio, and then this long discussion started about the type of radio show he could do, Quiet Storms and Delilah type stuff. He was really very funny and in great humor even though he was ill. Probably with that bug that I am just now starting to get over...
I was done with errands by 9pm and in the sky there was a full moon. That I think was a sign of things to come.
Well the rest of that night I saw a lot of things that gave me the tinglys-good tinglys. Can't eat because everything is too intense - tinglys.
There was a complete sensory overload, for me. All I can say is that everything was really intense! Kevin, Nick, Sharon, Phyllis, Brad. It was really too much. My heart was racing, I really couldn't think straight after a while.
When I left to go home there was Flemenco guitar playing on the radio.
Last night was too much, and it wasn't cold at all!
I know this post is vague, but it is too intense to explain. There were just too many things going on, one right after the other, with no break in between. Too much to take in. Too much talking, laughing, screaming, standing, sitting, standing again, yelling, silence, dead silence, tv, questions, answers-no answers, a mess. I am going to have to write it. Really write it. Geez

About The Year

I like these things

1. What was your favorite moment of the year? I would say the entire month of October, for my birthday and all the stuff I was doing. That was really the greatest month of the year! hahahah

2. What was your least favorite moment of the year? At the end of July I think. That was pretty bad. I had some horrendous stuff happen that didn't even need to happen. People can be base sometimes.

3. Where were you when 2005 began? who were you with? My sister came to visit so I was in my apartment with her. She was asleep I think. New Years doesn't mean that much to her, and she falls asleep at the drop of a hat. I was on the phone talking to mummy annd watching TV. She was sleeping! hahhaha

4. Did you keep your new years resolutions of 2005?
Yes. I only had one and I achieved it! (me)

5. Do you have a new years resolution for 2006?
Yes. I can't spill the beans about it though, or I may not do it.

6. Did you fall in love in 2005? if yes..with who? are you still in love with them?
You know what? With Jesus. I really did! Still am.... its really great having that relationship and knowing someone is always really and truly there for you all the time. Before I had an ok relationship with HIM, now its really out there.

7. Did you do anything weird in 2005? YES. I think so. I sorta became, not myself for a minute and let things happen that I should not have. I let people do and say things that usually would not even have been a thought in their mind around me...So that was weird.

8. Did you make any new friends in 2005? Yes a lot actually. I was surprised, because that was a non-issue in 2004. I didn't want to have the hassle then.

9. Who are your favorite new friends? Right this minute I am gonna say Andy (I can't help it-he's too nice), Darlene and then Brigitte!

10. Did you lose anybody close to you in 2005? No. Thank God

11. Did you miss anybody in the past year? Yes. ERLINE! hahahah (I am guilt tripping you girl because of what you said on messenger yesterday:))

12. What was your favorite song from 2005? There were a lot, so let's see...First "Gold Digger" by Kanye West, "Unpredictable" by Jamie Foxx, anything from Sean Paul, Maysa, Chris Botti, Mariah Carey, Gwen Stefani, Lightfoot....and tons more

13. Did you drink alot of alcohol in 2005? No. Not a lot.

14. Did you treat anybody badly in 2005? Not intentionally but I am sure I did.

15. Did someone treat you badly in 2005? The year wouldn't be complete if someone didn't take a good old stab at it LOL!

16. What was your favorite TV moment for 2005. Oh yes! I saw Michael McDonald sing the national anthem at some baseball game and he still looks great.
Then on PBS I saw a John Mayer concert (loved it to death).
Rachel Ray (my fav person on food network) is really blowing up the screen and it could not have happened to a nicer person.
I also liked when Tom Cruise jumped on Oprah's couch because he was excited about Katie...I thought it was great not weird, like people are trying to make it seem. People always try to make a negative out of someone being genuine about their feelings for another person.
We should all be so lucky to have someone willing to jump on a couch in front of millions to say how cool they think we are. Keep jumping Tom, I will go see Mission Impossible 3!

17. Meet anybody famous? Yes. Michael York, Todd Agnew, Jars of Clay, I forget who else.

18. If you could go back in time to any moment of 2005 and change something..what would it be?
Nah I wouldn't change a thing, not even the gory stuff. I learned a whole lot.

Derailed Hayride

Ummmm I know the critics didn't like Derailed.
I thought it was ok.
Just ok though.
I like Clive Owen and I love Vincent Cassell so that made it ok. When Vincent spoke french that made the movie worthwhile in my book hahah. I know Willie was done with it early on, and so was I . I just can't get into them making heroes out of people who are just gross at being kind and caring, to people they swore to be kind and caring to. But the turns and twists kept it interesting enough and then of course Vincent was there. Wow this guy is something else as an actor and otherwise! Ok I have to say it Yum... and very nice that he is married and everything so yum is good.

Ok so when we take the annual hayride, some of the characters really get into it. Everybody was all abbout the taxes. Before we even got out of the car they were about the taxes!
There was one Roman Soldier who I swear had a bee in his real life bonnet.
I mean, I dunno if he was upset because his legs were cold or something but this guy was taking out some frustrations. You should have heard him-he was all about the peasants (us sitting on the slabs of hay, with our purses) not paying their taxes...I love it!
It was really amusing. Truly my favorite part is the Roman soldiers. They have the coolest costumes and props. Then we drove though the neighborhoods to look at the lights but the best thing that I saw was this fountain that was unbelievably dreamy. Even though it was really cold out. The fountain made you feel as if you can stand there or sit there in a sundress. Add that to 105.1 playing Christmas Carols and you've got yourself some good times (lol).

Yeh,and about the carols. Its all good till everybody in the car starts doing harmony, or alto, or mezzo voice, then it gets annoying (especially if you are hungry) so you have to change it to 104.9 for a while and get some Gwen Stefani and Sean Paul in your system.

Christmas Party

So some people at my church organized this party. My church is so big that I don't really get to know a lot of people there. So when I got this email invite I decided to go. Getting there was a big headache because of the rain. I had to stop at Albertson's to get some cookies to take there. Then of course I got sidetracked looking at the other desserts. There was a black forest cake there.
Janice and I looked at it for a while before I decided I would not get it!
So when we finally got to the party Janice and I went and immediately met and hit it off with Brigitte (pronouce the French way-she is from Domincan Republic), and Kelly, and Darlene. The other people were really nice too and a lot of fun to talk to.
Ok first the food..Great stuff...Ummm someone brought devilled eggs hahahha
I was good though. I only had 4 slices. There were wings, cookies, meatballs, some kind of raw salmon hors d'oeuvres, sweet potato biscuits, cake...you can imagine. Unfortunately the eggs and one wing filled me up, so I couldn't get to anything else.....
Then they had these get to know you games about christmas..which I won because I had all my answers filled in! hahahah. I hate to say it this way but I always win those types of games! I won this candle that was shaped and looked like a fruitcake and smelled like pumpkin bread. I exchanged with someone who won a mug for another game they played. They played this kind of balance and coordiantion game which had everyone falling over. Here is Sharon just about to fall into Pat. She'd fallen on Kelly earlier.

One of the other games they played was this wrapping game which I was glad I didnt volunteer for when I saw what it was. The lady behind the guy had to go ahead and wrap the present if she could reach round him...ummm I was really glad I hadn't volunteered. :)

So a bunch of us exchanged emails.

It was kinda strange because a lot of them said they saw me before at church but I had never really seen any of them....I always sit in the same place so I guess that is why they have seen me.
They are having some Christmas dinner soon but I don't know. I'll think about it.
There are so many Chrismas things coming up, including a Hayride tonight! YEAH!
Hugs M

Laid Up

Immediately after this dinner on Tuesday started to feel weird. My throat started to hurt on Wednesday.
By Thursday morning I couldn't move. I slept most of the day and felt good enough to drive to a christmas party I promised some people I would go to....
Meanwhile. Here is our dinner picture.
We had a good time. I didn't get to eat though..Long story..well short story but I don't want to hold a grudge.

Music Appreciation Class

I have to explain this because it keeps coming up in my memory.
When I started high school at age 11 (sixth grade starts High School for us in Trini), we had a class called Music.
When we got to Form 4 (9th grade), it was called Music Appreciation. There was one Music teacher, Mrs S.
She was apparently very good at what she did, sang opera, was known in music circles around the world and the 'it girl' of music in Trini.
But WHOA! She was some kinda mean.
We were ALWAYS scared.
I did well always in music theory because it was interesting, and I like learning about people so the lives of Mozart etc., was like reading a celeb magazine.
I could memorize notes and treble clef stuff no problem. But reading music was a nightmare.
I just could not get it at all!
So I had to write all the notes in my music composition book. So for exams I had the letters written down under the notes. I would play my recorder and try not to shake while she accompanied on the piano. I usually got A grades for my playing and stuff, but when we had group playing Mrs S would go mad.
I swear she would make four of us play at a time.
There was always someone who couldn't read the music and hadn't written the letters under the music notes. So they went too slow.
Then someone else didn't understand the tempo so they would go too fast.
Mrs. S would always hear it and scream.
She wanted to know who was fowling up the music. She wanted to know who was making a mockery of these great works. (The Bumble Bee was great work?)
So she would line us up and make each of us play while she screamed. I just tried to keep my composure. I mean this was some traumatic stuff going down.
I am sorry to say this but Shakuntala had a very weak constitution. She was always shaking when someone was yelling, so the music sounded shaky. Then Mrs. S would yell and say "get the hell out of my sight." I felt sorry for Shakuntala but glad that it wasn't me.

It got so bad that I had to stop sitting with Kisha, Giselle and Nikki during Music class.
I had to stop because they/we were always making jokes about why she was so cross. Of course it all had to do with the frequency of how often she was actually 'getting any at home' (remember we are age 13 when these jokes started, then music appreciation at age 16). So we would be giggling hard at everything she said, all these innuendos we made up ....most of which I didn't get anyway. The way she sat, how she walked, everything was a joke about how much she 'got'.
Well I know that laughing while you are trying to play isn't good...Most times I was kinda lipsyncing the stuff till she called on me....I just couldn't chance a mistake in group.
I was always stressed out in that class.
It was really pretty bad. Bt I must say that what I remember and like most about it was Bolero by Ravel (lot of controversy behind that piece), and the Erlking by Goethe. At least I appreciated something!

Lights and Kettle Corn

So every year for Christmas they light up the downtown and celebrate by letting all the townspeople watch a parade, listen to music and eat candy. So we all decided to go there and check it out like we did last year.
We ran across a great singer and guitarist that I had to get a picture with. I forget their names now but they took my email info down so they could put me on the mailing list for their performances.
I had actually seen them perform on stage and at Jazz places before.
I never actually talked to them in person. After Igot the pic I talked to her for a while and her daughter came running up to me for a lift up! Too cute!

Jan and I of course had to get pic with the christmas characters. We got the gingerbread woman, Rudolph (or what I think was supposed to be Rudolph and this Santa rat thing. I don't know about that Rat...his/her hands were on our butts for this shot. I don't quite know how I felt about that......but notice everyone in the pic had a big old toothy smile lol. I was thinking "What the....!"

Of course at these downtown things there is a ton of food and snacks...so we had to have Kettle Corn. This huge bag fed four of us when Phil showed up and there was still a lot left the next day (I'm a little bit queasy from it now!). Just looking at this Candy Apple made me ill.

Now Tally is small so you are bound to meet the local Celebrities.
So here we are with weather lady and storm chaser Nancy Dignon. She is really nice and just had knee surgery and so was limping along. She and Mark had this big old Irish heritage thing going on.
We also saw news anchor Shonda Knight but she was jetting off down the street past the parade.

The parade we didn't get to stay for the whole thing because we had to meet Phil, but there was a ginger bread float that was really cool. Before the parade we went to the Bells Choir thing and met up with Ana and her family. That was a pretty good concert. We went to meet Phil after all of that and I got a great shot of Westcott from College Ave. Then of them walking to College from downtown. It wasn't even that cold. Then we met Phil and went to see some football game (FSU and some VA place) at some place called Shenanigans. It was way out there. But I guess we had fun. I don't know because I was asleep half the time. When they weren't screaming at the TV there, I was asleep.

Bells Choir

First Baptist Church had their Annual Bell's Choir Performances. It was great as usual but my favorite was Riu Riu Chiu. This was really rythmic with drums and everything. I also liked when they did Go Tell it On The Mountain.
The audience had to sing as well. Angels We Have Heard on High.
Janice was doing the harmony...or trying anyway (Tee Hee).

Avatar

My sis sent me this last night while we were chatting. It is an Avatar. You dress it up and 'color' it to make it look like yourself or not like yourself...
I thought it was cool so I did one and this is how it came out.
Of course its never going to look exactly like you, but a reasonable facsimilie is fine. They don't let you make the body bigger or anything so it is not perfect but whatever....

Red Ryders

They showed it for the first time last night I think for the Christmas season. My favorite Christmas movie. "A Christmas Story." I never get tired of it....
They usually have a 24 hour marathon every year...
My second favorite is "It's A Wonderful Life". . . then anything Charlie Brown

Well Peter Billingsley will be in a movie next year with Jennifer Aniston called The Break Up.
So maybe he will be adorable still (maybe).
This show was one of the best things I ever saw when I was growing up. We even knew some of the lines by heart.
"Daddy's gonna kill Ralphy!"

"Don't you give me that look young man or you're gonna get it!"

"You used up all the glue, on purpose!"

"Jealous!? Why would I be jealous of a Lamp?"

"Because I WON!"

"Don't bother me. I'm thinking"

You may have noticed that all the screams from the kids getting pushed down the slide after talking to Santa were the same. "Ahh, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"

The best.

Seasonal Celebration

That's what they called the concert. They didn't want to say Christmas I guess. Anyway Janice and I went there last night and met up with a friend of mine from Trinidad, Anna.
At night Westcott looks sublime!

Well the whole concert was enjoyable but I want to break it down. They started with How Shall I Fitly Meet Thee. The singers were on stage and in the aisles, but the best part of this performace was the trumpets.
The Women's Glee Club and the Madrigal Singers stuff was a little bit slow and kinda boring so I'll skip that, but then they had some kids perform and that was really adorable!

There were 65 kids (I counted), and out of that only 6 boys, so they had those boys interspersed across the stage. The cute part was that a lot of the kids were wearing Mary Janes or Oxfords...you know, their CHOIR SHOES! :)

The songs like O Come Emmanuel, Do You Hear What I Hear, and Carol of the Bells, reminded me of choir in high school when we had to practice for the Christmas shows and concerts at Trinity Church downtown. I even remembered all the mezzo soprano parts that I had to do.

There were a couple of African songs like Betelehemu and Natufurai which sounded very American. I just remember the Tallahassee Boys choir singing that stuff, and nothing else I have heard can really compare to the energy, passion, and accents that the boys had.

The Jazz Vocal Ensemble didn't really sound like Jazz at all! It was kind of strange to hear them. They were entertaining though because they danced and moved around etc.

The Collegians sang Run To The Manger, and they had an interesting sound...like across between chain gang workers and a barbershop quartet, so I really liked that performance. They also did a number called Hush! My dear, lie still and slumber. That was really interesting because they had a Counter Tenor (who sounded very much like a woman). Check them out. The guitar was excellent. He just picked at the strings the whole time. 1-2-3-4, 1-2-3-4-5-6., in that tempo! I loved that.

This director is really great. His name is Andre Thomas and he is actually one of the best music directors in the United States. He was really gracious on stage.

The audience sang two songs. Angels We Have Heard On High and Deck The Halls. That was a lot of fun to do. There was someone on stage directing us with the tempo and encouraging harmony. You really felt like your music teacher was up there telling you what to do...but in this case a much nicer, kinder, non- yelling, non-screaming, non- telling you that you are a failure because you don't breathe from your diaphragm, music teacher! (LOL).

And last but certainly not least. The gospel choir. Oh My! These were the best performaces of the night. The audience screamed and gave standing ovations to them (this only happened with them). They sang Joyful Joyful (remember they sang this in Sister Act 2 led by Lauryn Hill), and Now Behold the Lamb (I think I heard this on Diary Of a Mad Black woman but the Tally Boys Choir has done it many times).
They had the best singers. The lead for Joyful Joyful sounded like an Angel. It was haunting... You can see her there singing and the two guys to her left of the picture did a Gospel rap!

Well we had a very good time. If you look in the background you can see the fountain at Wescott. I really like how it looks at night. Sometimes it is lit up and looks amazing. We saw this guy playing the harmonica outside and I thought it was cool.
The town Christmas Lights thing is coming soon and Choir of the Bells so I may go see that as well.
