A Place on Earth by Wendell Berry (less a novel than a brilliantly crafted painting in words)
Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis (Lewis's "myth retold" and by his own account the best thing he ever did. I read this book at least once every other year)
All the Kings Men by Robert Penn Warren (the prose is so good you feel llike you're eating it)
